knowing dark

“Every moment of light and dark is a miracle.”   –  Walt Whitman

“In the middle of the journey of our life I came to myself within a dark wood where the straight way was lost.”   –  Dante Alighieri

“Roll on, deep and dark blue ocean, roll. Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain. Man marks the earth with ruin, but is control stops with the shore.”   –  Lord Byron

knowing dark

were you aware

that both darkness

and light

possess specific scents, music and texture?

the odor of darkness cannot be

fully appreciated by inexperienced senses

years spent where light was restricted

refine the senses educate them

intimacy with every shade of night

each nuance

feeling my way

making the most of a unique gift

over time

senses heighten

a new world

  1. I love it! Light and dark and shadows are fascinating and we have to keep feeling our way through it all. It’s amazing when suddenly everything shines.

  2. the odor of darkness… i love this… and i think we def. need experienced senses to fully appreciate it.. i’m still learning…

  3. I love how we can’t live without light or dark, if we didn’t have the bad times then we wouldn’t know the good ones when they arrived.
An incredibly expressive poem, love the quotes too of course! 🙂 x

  4. What a wonderful poem Lea! I love the “odor of darkness”! Ive never seen it like that before. Ans then the ending! Well, I simply looked at my envelope of sunshine crammed full of wonderful light, all spilling from the beautiful card, which I havent had time to acknowledge fully as all the family have been here for aweek. They have just left and the house feels too empty, but I have my sunshine card. Thank you so much.

    1. Oh I have! 🙂 It has been Spring here for nearly two weeks and more predicted! 🙂
Darkness does seem to have a bad reputation. There is the darkness of ignorance or abuse but there is also the darkness that allows bulbs and seeds to take root and grow! 🙂

    1. Growing up in the darkest of dark, I learned to make friends with it. I know its names, sounds, smells and colors. Yet, I moved into the sunshine and delight in it. However, the night is now an old friend.

  5. Sign of Hope is a post about my experience with daffodils in a dark dark time……sign of hope and resurrection ……….
