“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.” – The Tempest Act 4, Scene 1
“Lord, what fools these mortals be.” – A Midsummer Night’s Dream
JOYEUX ANNIVERSAIRE! In honor of the Bard’s birthday, I offer one of his well known and much-loved sonnets. Yet when I read it, or think of its message, for me it is not just about romantic love but the love of family, friends, humanity, and our struggling environment.
Sonnet 116: Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O no! It is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand’ring bark,
Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.
Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle’s compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me prov’d,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov’d.
Perhaps you have a favorite, and perhaps there is too much to choose from to eliminate others?
Bisous, Léa
“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.”
Yes and remember, he was a serious insomniac, whose sleep was punctuated by terrible nightmares hence, “To die, to sleep – to sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there’s the rub, for in this sleep of death what dreams may come…”
Ah yes. There are so many wonderful quotes when we enter his realm The quote you offer reminds me of a very brief poem by another poet I’ve enjoyed. First Fig – My candle burns at both ends, it will not last the night. But oh my foes, and my friends, it gives a lovely light. – Edna Saint Vincent Millay
Merci beaucoup Cindy! xxxx
I enjoyed being greeted with this sonnet to start my day. Thank you!
How kind of you to say so. I read a delightful quote on a blog this morning and it inspired what I’m planning for next week. It is one I had on a poster many years ago but its message in engraved much deeper inside. x
I like Shakespeare. He has inspired me to write poetry in sonnet form. . .
Bravo, well done! I’m sure he has inspired many writers, actors…
Probably more than anyone else. . .
That is very likely but don’t underestimate George Orwell or… We don’t all hear the same voice.
What is your favorite masculine scent from them?
I’m afraid I’m not up on that. I only know of them as I researched it for a friend in California who visits me once a year. She knew of the company and wanted to visit there. Perhaps next time…
I guess we both have our homework then =P
Oops I replied on our wrong thread 🙂 But I think you know what I’m referring too .
Forgive me. 🙂
