Silence

“Silence is a true friend who never betrays.”   – Confucius

“True silence is the rest of the mind, and is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment.”  – William Penn

“Music and silence combine strongly because music is done with silence, and silence is full of music.”  – Marcel Marceau

Silence

That is not what

She is saying –

Music – a passion

But silence – silken, warm

Comforter, blanket, cape

To withdraw –

The cocoon where

Creativity germinates freely

Where her mind

slows its frantic pace

From chaos to

Inspiration

 Repressed mantra

–

Silence – her fortress

It has her back

Shelter from the storm

 She hears the predator coming

The clacking of her heels

Rattling of keys

Always different from other disasters

Silence, sounds its warning

Flight, the favored response

Hushed cantata

Soldiers

Recount lying in wait

As the enemy approaches

Rubber sole alarm

The heart skips beats

Hands quiver, mouth dry

Words, forsake her

Her litany to be alone

 Quelled psalms of youth

Soil, secure, reticent, fertile

Where seeds finds solace,

Nourishment, sanctuary,

Strength, time – her friends

Adapting, evolving, processing

She bursts forth

 Her ode to joy

Quotes – Pearls of wisdom…

Quotes – Pearls of wisdom? Or perhaps they are the spark for inspiration? If a quote speaks to you, explore the reason it does. If it is something you do not except, why doesn’t it? If quotes were charms for a bracelet I could not lift either arm. Anything that can get me thinking, defending my position, looking at something in a new light, it has served me well. Quotes are a powerhouse and just wait for us to discover them and examine what they mean to us as individuals. Perhaps there are a few you can take for a walk across the page, canvas… It is my hope you will find something among what is offered here and see where it takes you… Often I find my best work when I attack a statement I have strong feelings about regardless if they are positive or negative. In fact, the negative ones are often the most enlightening.

stay soft

Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. TBR: A poem of book titles waiting to be read

“A home without books is a body without a soul.”  –   Marcus Tullius Cicero

” If you can only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”        –  Haruki Murakami

“Books are the plane, the train, and the road. They are the destination and the journey. They are home.”                                   –   Anna Quindlen

Over the years of blogging, I have seen a few poems built from book titles. Perhaps it is time to try one of my own. To be honest, these represent a tiny tip off the old iceberg and are one of several much larger TBR piles. Please understand, these are only emergency piles that have places of honour about the house and have nothing to do with my library… but one should always have something to read nearby!

Profond dans ses poèmes

As introduction to the following poem, I will tell you of a gift from my dear friend Yvonne in London. For the holidays she presented me with a copy of Les Fleurs Du Mal (Flowers of Evil) by Charles Baudelaire. With it she gave me a challenge to begin writing poems in French. Within the first poem or two, I was hooked. If you have not read any of his work, I encourage you to try. Translations of his work are available. Some may find it strange but as I began writing this piece, it came out bilingually. I present you with the original and again in English.

“Any healthy man can go without food for two days-but not without poetry.”  –  Charles Baudelaire

“The poet enjoys the incomparable privilege of being able to be himself and others as he wishes.”

                                                                        –  Charles Baudelaire

“Genius is childhood recalled at will.”  –  Charles Baudelaire

alas…

Untitled

Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.” – E.L. Doctorow

I get intrigued by a first line and I write to find out why it means something to me. You make discoveries just the way the reader does, so you’re simultaneously the writer and the reader.”                     – E.L. Doctorow

No

it isn’t like that

not at all

I never set out

to create an

not be named

it just doesn’t work

that way

I don’t write

a title

for a poem

that grows out

from that name

of words take me

on the journey

they have in mind

when they are ready

the words have voice

will tell me who

they are

where they are

leading me

I remain

their humble

Mirror, mirror…

“Mirror is my best friend, because when I cry, it never laughs.”  – Sir Charles Chaplin

“Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.”               – Camille Pissarro

If only our eyes saw souls instead of bodies how very different our ideals of beauty would be.”                   – author unknown

“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within.”
-Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

Mirror, Mirror

I embark on a journey

To find out just who is this person

Buried inside my eyelids

The one who lurks in front of the bathroom mirror

As I blow-dry my hair each morning

She mimics my movements

While I brush my teeth and short reddish hair

Thank you Clariol

Or is she mocking me?

We share a wardrobe

It is debatable whom the clothes fit better

I prefer to think the mirror is the one

Telling the tall tales

A mirror should never be believed

If it were kinder

Perhaps I wouldn’t avoid its glare
